Question:

Car rental issue - Italy Should I rent in Naples?

Traveling from Sorrento to Umbria on a Saturday. Planning on taking the train and rent car in Chiusi, but the train arrives arround 2pm, rental agency closes at 1pm. (rented a country villa 1/2 hour drive from the station). What to do? How awful would it be if I rented a car at Naples airport and drove to Umbria? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. First trip to Italy and we are a family of 4.

  1. Hoenestly, I would not even go to Naples.  Just returned from 10 days touring Italy.  Talked to other travelers complaining of Naples high crime and trash and graffiti filled streets.  Driving over there looks trecherous as well.  Stick to the trains and small to medium cities.  If you must rent a car, do it somewhere besides Rome or Naples.

  2. If I were you I would not, under any circumstances, drive in the city of Naples.  Ridiculous does not even begin to describe the traffic situation there.  The chances are incredibly high that you will get into some sort of accident.  And do not for a minute think about getting out of your car and leaving it anywhere, here again the odds are high that the car will not be there when you get back.

Umbria you will be fine, elsewhere around Italy you will be fine, but driving a car in Naples is a direct route to a car of fighting/screaming family member, and potentially/probably a ruined vacation.

I know many Italians who would never think of taking a car anywhere near the town.

Find any other solution you can.

  3. Driving in Naples is not for the faint hearted.

  4. So, If you are using your car for transportation WITHIN napoli as well as to GET OUT OF napoli, then GET A FULLY COMPREHENSIVE insurance policy, 'cause you'll be VERY LIKELY to bump into someone. if you're just escaping from Kabul, ehrrrm, Napoli to hit the Autostrada del Sole and get to chiusi-chianciano, then, as long as you're careful leaving Capodichino (the Airport) you should be fine...
