Question:

Car runs without key in ignition?

I installed a Pioneer headunit yesterday with no problems, drove maybe 60 miles the entire day, and then drove home. This morning I drive it 3 miles and come back and the car runs even after I remove the key. I have to disconnect the battery and wait 3-5 minutes for it to shut off by itself.

Is this the fault of the new stereo (which works flawlessly), or is it a seperate problem?

Car is a 2000 Ford Escort Zx2

  1. Sounds like your headunit is wired improperly. The wire supplying the 12V should be checked. If car shuts off after it is temporary disconnected means that it should be moved to another 12V source.

  2. it is a seperate problem. An easier way to stop your car is to pull your fuse for your ecu. the car will stop right away and then just put it right back

  3. the fault isn't the stereo, it's the installation, you have constant power back feeding to ignition(of the car), try making your own ground for the deck also... the back feed may be occurring at the ground of the pioneer...try disconnecting the ground from the pioneer while the car is running and the key is out...I'll bet doing that will  answer your question. the car should shut off
