Car service question?

I went to get my 30,000 mile service done at the jeep dealership on my 06' jeep commander and paid a arm and leg! Could I have done it cheaper else where? If so, where? How come it was $775.00 for 5 hrs. of work there? Never again!

  1. Dealer shop pop the hood, visually look at anything under the hood, start the engine for any abnormal noise, thickness of brake pads, road test and $775.00  All parts extra (like oil filter...)

  2. the thing is if you have a warranty taking it to a private shop or doing thing yourself will void you warranty but if you don't have one take it to a shop or do it yourself. where i live in Oregon dealers charge well over 100 dollars an hour while private shops about 60-80. for the same work. just go to a shop with a good rep.

  3. There are a couple of things that you need to know when dealing with the "dealer". The first thing is that if you are under warranty then yes its better for you to use the dealer for maintenance. It will be allot less of a hassle if you need to use your warranty. Next thing your dealer will use the "book" price for whatever work they do meaning if brakes take an hour and the book says they should take 3hrs then you pay them for 3hrs. The next thing and one of the most important is that dealer's now "pad" the scheduled service with unnecessary "extras".There are some who do things like flush the transmission when its not needed or flush the fuel system these are just gimmicks. Only have them do the service recommended by the owner's manual at the specified mileage no more and no less if you are not having problems. Just wait till you have those 16 spark plugs in the Hemi changed. That one is gonna cost you start saving now! LOL

  4. Seems about double to me....

    Most 30k's...

    1. Flush cooling system              $100

    2. Oil change                                $  30

    3. Balance and rotate tires         $  50

    4. Clean fuel injectors.                $ 180

    5.  Power steering flush              $ 100

    6. A lot of check this and check that ????

  5. There is no need to ever use a dealer service department, unless you wish to do so.

Using an independent shop for maintenance work WILL NOT, CAN NOT, void your warranty. There are laws that give you the right to use independents.

If an independent shop forgets to refill your oil after draining, the factory warranty won't cover that, but guess what? If a DEALER does the same thing, the factory warranty won't cover it either! In either case, you won't have to eat the cost, the shop will. (I know though that in the case of a dealer s***w-up, the still may submit a warranty claim, but that is their problem, and may cost them big in the long run, I have seen it!)

You surely could have had that service done by a reputable independent shop for a lot less cost, and in about two hours!

Dealers have extremely high overhead costs, and the customers have to pay that.

  6. 5 hours times 100 dollars an hour, then you have filters, fluids, etc....On your 60k sevice, try a reputable national chain shop, ask them when you are ready to print out a 60k for you and review it with you.
