Question:

Car speakers don't fit?

I'm going to put a new system in my 2000 caviler. I know the front door holds 4x6s, but, crutchfield.com is telling me that 90% of all 4x6 speakers don't fit my door. What's the deal? Are they too deep?

  1. Because of the design of that car, you will need to purchase shallow mount speakers. the reason most speakers dont fit is because the magnet in the back of them hits the glass if it is down all the way. The shallow mount is a thinner speaker with a smaller magnet. Try the Pioneer 4x6 (TSA 460). Allthough they are not specified as shallow mount speakers, I am sure that they will work because of their small magnet.

Oh yea, i also believe that the cavalair has a speaker basket in the front doors as well. You can take that out and that will give you an additional 1/4 in or so to play with. But this should be your last resort because the basket helps to protect the speaker from things like water falling b/t the door and the window. Good luck!

  2. your holes for the car may be a little bigger than what the speakers are. Check to make sure what size speakers fir in the FRONT door panels.  Make sure you gave the right make and model of your car to crutchfield.  That website is very relible and i have bought a sound sytem from them for christmas for my Subaru! Order there catalouge and call them if you have problems. I hope this helps and all your work pays off when you hear the new system.

  3. It's definitely because of the depth of the speakers

If you take your speakers out, you will be able to see for  yourself. I beleive in your car, the track for the window is right there.

If you take out the plastic c**p piece that holds the speaker, you might be able to 'custom fabricate' something that will hold a 6 1/2" speaker, which would give better sound
