I just purchased a 1997 Dodge Stratus, 4 cyl., automatic. Yesterday it stopped running smoothly and sputtered and stalled, acted like it was out of gas at 1/8 tank! I put more gas in, let it sit for an hour, and it started rough, then was fine for awhile until I stopped at a red light, and it acted like it was going to stall again! The Check Engine light is now on, and it makes a ticking noise when I drop it into Reverse or Drive. What's my problem?

  1. I fixed soo many cars with this problem and the one problem that always pops up is the intake tube loose, falling of, or broken. The car has a mass air flow, and strange things happen when that intake tube is disconnected. If it checks out alright, I would look for that check engine light, and look closely at the mass air flow sensor. Also a real dirty air filter will have the similar effect. All the components I mentioned are related, good luck.

  2. my answer is try to check it out first on auto repair shop...dude

  3. get the engine light scanned and its most likely related to emissions control system

a sensor is faulty    most likely a o2 sensor or maf sensor

  4. The one guy is close... Get the light scanned. Anytime a check engine light comes on its related to an emissions sensor. It sounds like a TPS (throttle position sensor) or possible the EGR (exhaust gas relief valve) being dirty or clogged. But when you slow down to a light and the car reaches idle, would suggest the IAC motor (Idle air control valve). If she cant hold a steady idle and it surges up and down, that maybe where you'd want to start looking. Also make sure any and all vacuum lines off the top of the engine are in tact without any holes or leaks for that matter. Any vacuum leak could cause anyone of the malfunctions your mention. Hopefully this helps you out, Good luck!!

  5. Did you put the right fuel into it? is it Diesel or Petrol?
