Question:

Car stored for 8 years with gas in it will not start. What do I do now? Car is a Ford Focus?

What I did:

Drained the gas and replaced it with fresh gas. Also added stabilizer.

Killed starter trying to turn it over by jumping it.

New starter installed.

Towed it to run the pistons and loosen the engine up with a lube sprayed into the air intake. (It is a stick shift).

New starter cranks well.

Blew out the gas lines with air.

Still no start.

I can not hear the fuel pump. Should I?

Any ideas?

  1. Never did say why the car was parked.

Approach with caution.   Check to see if timing belt is still on and correct.  Check inside the distributor to be sure all is normal in there.   Now, can the engine be turned over by hand(meaning a socket wrench on the crankshaft pulley)without it "sticking" somewhere?

OK, if all that works, then drain the fuel lines, fuel tank, replace fuel filter, replace fuel.

Replace battery.  They last only 5 years in a car that continually charges them.  It is definitely toast if it gets to sit.

While you are in there, you might as well change the spark plugs.  Chances are the old ones are rusty.

Okay you had a look in the distributor cap, you would have automatically noted the condition in there  - shiny metals or dull oxidized.  Clean that up and the cap replace. I don't know about the coil- for now we will assume that it is good.  Hopefully you have check the condition of all spark plug wires and made sure they are going where they are suppose to go.

You burned out the starter with LOW battery juice....and going on forever.  Starter motors are not meant for that.  You melted the internals of the starter.  They overheat quickly.  If car does not start in 10 seconds of cranking, something is wrong with the gas motor.  Crank 10 wait 30(for it to cool) before trying again. Turning the starter over more does not fix it.    Is fuel coming out at the carb( or whatever you have up there)?  No fuel, no run.   Why didn't you spray a shot of "cold start" into the air intake. and then try to start it.   Not alot.  Very hard on the motor.      I can't hear my fuel pump either.  In fact, I don't want to hear my fuel pump because it is the silent type.

There is no reason why this thing should not start now(unless someone stole the pistons or the cam is missing)

  2. Everything in the fuel system is gummed up. You have to drain out any of that gas from your tank, change the fuel filter and probably the injectors, and then it should start.

  3. The battery is probably dead.  Get a new battery.

  4. try turning the key to the start position a few times but do not crank the engine... then pull a plug to see if it is wet (smells like gas)..that will tell you if you are receiving gas you could also try squiting starting fluid into the throttle body but don't keep doing this as you could damage your pistons with repeated use. Check for spark ... with a plug out ground the electrode of the plug to the engine block and have someone crank the engine to see if the plug is firing.

  5. You shouldnt hear the fuel pump but still a way of checking it would be to pull the fuel line off the throttle body and put the car into run. If fuel starts pumping then you'll know it's not the fuel pump.

IF it's not the fuel pump, then it might be your throttle  body. ALSO, might wanna try cleaning the spark plugs with a wire brush..

Chances are it IS either your fuel pump or your throttle body being siezed up and needing some cleaning in the jets and other key areas.

Make sure you change the oil and oilf filter too. Not that this would be the probalem at all..

  6. If your ear is near the filler neck and someone just turns the key to the start position you should hear the pump initialize for a few seconds. If you do not then you need to test for power at the fuel pump/tank, should be a connector you can get to. If it has power then you have a bad pump.

You may also have clogged/stuck fuel injectors. Worry about after you get the fuel pump working...

  7. GO back to the original reson it was stored and begin from there .

    Check for 'VITAL SIGNS"

FIRE & FUEL & AIR !Once these guys come together something has to give. If you haved all these now you need to check what time they come together.

    GOOD LUCK!

                                         "BRILLIANT"!!!!

    EDIT:

PAY special attention to the fuel pump. Make sure it's pumping, also there has to be a charge in the battery if you tow or push start. Listen closely, yes you should hear the pump!
