I bought a car from a friend here in CA. The car was registered to his grandpa who is deceased..I never registered it nor got it put into my name here in california.

The car got towed..now its sitting in a towyard somewhere. What happens next? There is no paper trail coming back to me..and it's not in his grandsons name either..and I DONT want to claim it.

  1. They will run DMV on it, it will come back with Grandpa's name, they try to contact him. Ohh he's deceased....then they try to contact a family member if they don't want it or say they don't know who own's it. The tow yard can scrap it, or sell  it at auction.

  2. Run away.

    Fast.

If you don't want it, there's nothing that takes the car back to you that can hold up in any court.

If Grandpa gets a bill, Grandpa will get a bill, and a family member may try to come after you. However, if the car's still registered to Grandpa, there's nothing that legally ties you to that car. It's still Grandpa's car, even though he's not alive to claim it.

  3. sooo let it sit...with no paper in your name just RUN AWAY.

  4. There is not much you can do to get it back. The impound company charges to pick up the vehicle and charges by the day for storage. They will put a lien on the vehicle and hold a lien sale. There will not be any money owed on it after the lien sale.

  5. dont claim it.
