Car title with someone else. is it a risk?

I had sold my car to this guy from another state. He also has my title. he said he would sign it and send it back soon. I have got the money, so no worries about the payment. but i am worried that he hasnt got back to me with the title yet. i cant reach him cause his phone is now dead. what should i do?

  1. Why is he sending it back to you?  If it's his car now, all he has to do is fill it out & submit it to DMV.

    You need to cover yourself and send DMV a 'Release of Liability'.  This shows that you sold the vehicle on a certain date.  If anything happens after that date, your not held responsible.

I don't understand why he has to sign and send the title back.  It is usually the other way around.  If you sold the vehicle, you sign the title and give it to him, he goes to the DMV and gets a new title in his name.   If he is driving the vehicle and it is still in your name there could be a risk but if you signed it over to him, entered his name and address  as the buyer, you signed and dated it properly you are probably off the hook
