I think something might be wrong with my transmission in my car. It seems as if it is not getting enough power that it did before. i drive a 2001 dodge intrepid, automatic and it seems to be switching gears but it seems as if something is off. any suggestions?

  1. try driving it without using overdrive.

  2. have you flushed the trans?  it should be done every 47500 miles on that car (i think, this is from memory)

have you flushed the motor?  the 2.7 commone in base and SE model of that car is one of the worst sludging motors of recent memory.  even if you change the oil consistent, they will build up sludge in the motor, even on synthetic oil (that's rare, most cars with this problem can be hidden with synthetic).  if the motor is not running at full power the transmission will struggle to keep up.

  3. flush the transmission, old or low trans fluid can cause the trans to lag behind and not keep up with the engine.

And also one common problem with cars (especially if you use gas with 10% ethanol) your Vac. Hose can dry out and puncture which causes extreme loss of power and lagging in high and low rpms. My mom's truck had this problem, she used 10% ethanol and it dried out the Vacuum Hose in her car and it was so bad that you had to floor it every time just to get moving, it had at least 50% reduction in power...replaced the Vacuum hose for $70 and all the power problems went away.

  4. check your spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor probably time for a tune up

    go with your gut
