Question:

Car window motor "cable"

so my window stopped going up and down this afternoon. I'm 9 months pregnant and decided to have a "Mr. Fix it" moment because the quote I got to fix it was $125!

So I take the panel off and can see the motor and the cable pulley behind the next panel.

It's obvious what the problem is....the cable came out of it's grooves and is tangled. Window is actually on track and not broke or anything.

I needed another tool to take the next panel off so I had to stop....plus it's like 101 degrees out ( heat index 109 ) and I NEEDED to come in before I passed out...lol

But I'm assuming I can just rewind it and whalah? it will be fixed? right??

the cable runs from a little spool with grooves to the "window lift"

Thats the best I can describe it. lol

  1. No you cant just fix the cable. If you dug a little further I am sure that you wiould find something that is damaged.125 dollars really sounds resonable for the repair.

  2. Would really help if you gave us an idea of what you are working on. Not all cars are the same, and we can probably give you a better idea of what to do or what may have caused it. Usually when a cable comes off and gets twisted , something else is also damaged . They don`t just fall off for no reason.

  3. Yes, but ..... You should ask yourself 'Why did it come off to begin with?" There might be something else amiss or out of alignment in there.

Congradulations and good luck with your new one!

  4. its called a window regulator...its an easy fix its just a drop in pretty much..you just need the part....

  5. What I do when that happens is say a few choice words about being cheap and no limit switches to stop it.

Then work the window down enough to get it routed back on the pulleys. Then work the window up all the way. Then run it down a little at at time to make sure it is going to stay on track and in the pulleys.

After get all the way to the bottom (window all the way down) I generally run it up and down a couple times before putting the panel back on.

It's a darn pain in the rear end. Just have to watch it and not jam it all the way up or down. As soon as it gets up get off the switch the same for down.

What's causing that is wear causing slack & Also misalignment.

Also cheaply made: cheap material: that no amount of craftsman ship on the production line can over come.

I had a Chevy S-10 pick up that from the time it was 3 months old until I got rid of it every time the doors got slammed hard I've have to go in and put cable back on pulleys.

Before any one says anything yeah it was under warranty and they were replaced several times. That is if you don't count the money I was losing sitting there at the dealers waiting for them to fix it.
