Question:

Car won't turn over and white smoke coming from engine?

Right now my car is not turning over, it's cranking but it won't turn over all the way. Plus I noticed there was some white smoke coming from the engine, I just had the oil changed recently so hopefully that'll help eliminate some worst case scenarios.... thanks Also, it's an early 90's Pontiac Grand Prix with about 175k miles on it... thank you for the help!

  1. Just to clarify.  If you can crank it "you are turning it over"   It is just not starting.

If you crank it and it stops the engine is either seized or the battery is dead.

I am guessing the white smoke is either steam ( the engine overheated because you were in stop and go traffic(barely moving) and your fan did not come on or the thermostat got stuck. and it was a hot day.

       Or your electrical is melting.

It is not the oil.     Either way, you need a battery charge or a jump start once the engine cools down.

  2. Time to get it to the graveyard.  You could do a head gasket job on it. but then what about the damage already done to the pistons? And the cylinder block? the head gasket would be like putting a bandage on a major surgery. Those engines are not fixable.  They are disposable.  You have to have another engine put into it.  The cylinders have damage because of the coolant leaking into the oil .  Even if you get the head gasket replaced, there is significant damage to the cylinder s and the block.

Get another vehicle.  I'd say a Honda, or a ford product.  'they're better than the gm vehicles.

  3. turning over and cranking is the same thing friend.lol. anyway, it could be the starter dragging or the solenoid is bad. make sure your battery is fully charged.

  4. sounds like your head gasket is gone your your leaking coolant into your engine. Depends on if you have someone else fix your car or if you fix it your self. I did my own took my a little over an hour. Its not hard just gotta make sure the gasket is lined up properly or will still leak. I bet its head gasket though.

  5. Sounds like your engine is worn out; The white smoke MIGHT mean that you are getting water into the combustion area ( on the pistons ) . Check your oil dipstick, and see if there is any water on it; If not, then MAYBE the piston rings are worn out, and oil is getting up into the combustion area. Pull all of the spark plugs(see if they are "fouled"), and do a compression check on all of the cyclinders. They should ALL have 85-125 lbs psi.

  6. sorry to tell you this but the engine headgasket of your vehicle is leaking coolant into the cylinder of the engine. this cause engine not to turn over. white smoke is cause by coolant leaking into a hot area. cost to repair this headgasket  about 1500.00 if you have a 6 cylinders engine

  7. head gasket?   make sure there is not a whiteish colour to the oil ...   too much oil?   check dipstick...   but im betting head gasket since those cars have a lot of head gasket issues
