Question:

Caracas safe to live?

I might be transferred for my job to work and live in Caracas for a while. I was wondering which areas or neighbourhoods would be safe to live, and still be close to the financial and business centers? I am looking for an upscale living area. Any suggestions anyone?

  1. At this moment Caracas as a whole is not the safest city to live in but certain municipalities and neighborhoods are actually quite secure. Caracas is divided in 5 municipalities (Libertador, Chacao, Baruta, El Hatillo and Sucre), of those the safest is Chacao, followed by El Hatillo and Baruta. Depending in what company you will be working your office could be most possibly in one of the following business centers: San Bernardino, El Rosal, Chuao, Las Mercedes or Altamira.

If you will be working in San Bernardino the safest neighborhoods nearby are El Country Club and La Castellana. If your office will be in El Rosal then the nearest and safest are Las Mercedes, El Country Club and La Castellana. If you are working either in Chuao, Las Mercedes or Altamira you are in luck, these are the safest areas of the city and the neighborhoods that surround them are high-class and very safe (the neighborhoods are: Las Mercedes, Altamira, La Castellana, El Country Club, Los Palos Grandes, Valle Arriba, Lomas de San Roman, Prados del Este, Santa Fe).

Further away of the city but definitely much more tranquil is the high-class and exclusive neighborhood of La Lagunita.

Just in case this helps as well in your decision making most ambassadors and diplomats live either in Valle Arriba (the US embassy and several other dozen of embassies are located here) or in El Country Club.

  2. It's safe to live in the east and south of the city. Baruta, el Hatillo and Chacao are the best municipios to live in. Chacao is the city's financial and business center and has better transportation systems. In Baruta public transportation isn't that good because there is no subway. And el Hatillo is the farthest away from anything.
