Caracortado all set to get the Sensational Stakes out of the way like he did in the Daytona Stakes
The thing about Caracortado is that he is never out of the race. No matter how bleak his chances are in a race or during a race, the California bred seems to find another wing from situations where he seems to be certainly down and out.
Hence, it becomes doubly difficult to rule out someone like Caracortado, who can come back from way behind to pack a mean punch.
That is exactly why Michael Machowsky’s trainee is heading the field for the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes over at Santa Anita’s hillside turf course on 28 January, 2012.
This is the same venue and the same course where Caracortado last time conjured up an amazing comeback from behind to win the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes on 8 January, 2012, which was a nice compensation for finishing fifth in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile at Churchill Downs, on 5 November, 2011, to winner, Regally Ready.
The 5-year-old Cat Dreams' gelding is out of mare Mons Venus by Maria’s Mon, closes with a rush last time he ran over Santa Anita’s turf course, and same is expected of the unpredictable gelding in the Sensational Star Stakes.
Prior to the Breeders’ Cup, Caracortado appeared to be in visually good form, as he downed the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on 27 August, 2011, at Del Mar, going over 1 mile on turf.
The mile long race reeled in a competitive field, with the likes of Mr. Commons and Calimonco, but Caracortado proved to be a handful as he came off the pace, sweeping past Calimonco in third, and then just edging past Mr. Commons to win the race with a winning time of 1 minute and 34.24 seconds.
Michael Machowsky would like to erase the Breeders’ Cup memory, where Caracortado was expected to do well and top a formidable field, but the Blahut Stable owned gelding couldn’t come off the pace at 5 furlongs, finishing a non-threatening fifth on the day.
The main goal for Caracortado is to win the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile, as he raced last year and missed it by a whisker, finishing second to Fluke.
