Caracortado fires a five furlong bullet ahead of the Daytona Stakes
The 5-year-old gelding, Caracortado, has had a mixed bag in the 2011 season, where he should have won more races, but managed to place himself on the board every now and then, and winning only 2 races, Caracortado finished 2 times on the money out of eight starts in the 2011 campaign.
The newly turned 5-year-old gelding will seek to reverse those 2011 stats into more wins rather than more missed opportunities.
The Michael Machowsky trained gelding is looking sharp in his workouts and he is pointed towards the Grade 3, $100,000 Daytona Stakes at Santa Anita Park on 8 January, 2012, over a distance of six and a half furlongs against 4-year-old and above colts and geldings.
Blahut Racing’s Caracortado fired a five furlong bullet under Zoe Cadman, when he covered the five furlong distance in 1 minute and 0.91 seconds over Santa Anita Park’s fast main track on 1 January, 2012.
Caracortado’s run was clocked the fastest of 37 drills on the same day at the same distance.
However, when Caracortado will go out to race in the Daytona Stakes, he will have a new jockey in the form of Rafael Bejarano.
This will be a major change for the California bred son of Cat Dreams, out of mare Mons Venus by Maria’s Mon, because he has been ridden continuously by Joe Talamo in his last 10 starts, when he took over from jockey Paul Atkinson on 11 November, 2010.
As far as the workout was concerned, Caracortado even surprised his trainer, Michael Machowsky, who said, “It was a little quicker than I wanted, but he went nice and easy".
“He was bouncing. He had a good three-quarters last week so I just went five-eighths today.”
Dayton Stakes has also reeled in a Breeders’ Cup winner, Regally Ready, a 5-year-old gelding, who won the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011, and defeated the likes of Country Day in second, and Perfect Officer in third, while covering the five furlong distance in 56.84 seconds.
When asked about Regally Ready’s inclusion in the race, Michael Machowsky said. “That’s fine. Bring ‘em on.”
