Caracortado on the verge of winning a Grade 1 race this year – Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes the next target
The son of Cat Dreams 4-year-old gelding Caracortado has found it tough to win Grade 1 races this year. Though coming close and finishing second twice in grade 1 races this year, Caracortado given another opportunity to convert his inclusion in the $300,000
Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes in to a win at Del Mar on 23 July.
Don Blahut and Mike Machowsky, co-owners of Caracortado think that gelding has done great and put on some weight. He will be running among a good unit of horses, with the likes of Acclamation, it is not going to be easy and not an ideal place to pick up
his first Grade 1 win of 2011.
Although, Caracortado has come so close to win a Grade 1 race that he seems on the verge of a breakthrough, and the opening day feature Eddie Read Stakes could be the place. Despite tough competition and all the favourites, when the race is on all bets are
off.
Caracortado won his first race of the year at Santa Anita under jockey Joseph Talamo. The Sunshine Millions Turf over a distance of 1 1/18 miles on 29 January 2011. He bolted past his rivals The Usual Q.T and Soul Candy, completing the distance in 1 minute
and 46.75 seconds.
His first Grade 1 race of the year was the Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita turf on 5 March 2011. With a mile to run, Caracortado broke well under Joseph Talamo who held him off, but with a nice drive the gelding surged past opponents as he finished just behind
the winner Fluke.
It took him 1 minute and 33.50 seconds to cover the distance at Santa Anita race course. The second opportunity happens to be his last race too, the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park on 2 July.
Under his usual jockey, Caracortado courageously took on a field filled with grade 1 winners, but nothing could differentiate him from them as he ran as good as anyone out there, with no luck on Caracortado’s side he was  valiant in defeat.
The stature of the Eddie Read Stakes reel in exciting talent, the most notable Smart Bid and also Acclamation, who has been the leading horse in the spring/summer meet at Hollywood Park on turf.
Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes winner, Celtic Princess is also the one to look out for. She won the race at Hollywood last month. The Eddie Read Stakes have drawn a field of eight horses.
Caracortado has a massive advantage of good form, he ran really well in the Shoemaker mile, but Courageous Cat got the best of Caracortado on the stretch, little thing to work on before the big race.
