Caracortado pointed to California Cup Classic at Santa Anita after bagging the Del Mar Mile at Mr. Commons' expense

The 4-year-old Michael Machowsky trained gelding, Caracortado, in his previous start, stayed on turf as he flew home in Del Mar Mile on 27 August, 2011.
The Blahut Racing and Lo Hi Racing owned gelding blazed past his opponents in last quarter, 22 seconds flat, under jockey Joe Talamo, who forged to the front in the final stride to nose out the talented 3-year-old colt, Mr. Commons, to win the Grade 2 $200,000
Del Mar Mile.
After a month’s time off, apart from training, Caracortado is pointed to run in the $175,000 California Cup Classic at Santa Anita on 29 October, 2011.
The race is a drop in class for Caracortado, but he is sticking to his favoured surface, turf.
According to trainer Michael Machowsky, the 4-year-old gelding has had a tough season and he wants to make it as easy as possible for him, thus the Cal Cup.
The California Cup Classic wasn’t always run on grass, but when they made the decision to run this year’s race on turf, it made the decision easy for Michael Machowsky to run his gelding on his preferred surface.
The son of Cat Dreams out of Mons Venus by Maria’s Mon, Caracortado, has had seven starts this season, and he only managed to win twice with two second place finishes and a single third place finish.
His other wins apart from the Del Mar Mile, came in the Sunshine Millions Turf, the first start Caracortado made in the 2011 season.
It was run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita on 29 January, 2011. Under jockey Joe Talamo, the pair covered the 1 1/8 mile distance in 1 minute and 46.75 seconds.
The 4-year-old gelding got very close to winning a grade 1 race this season, twice.
Once in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita where he got narrowly edged out by Fluke and finished second.
The second was in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile, where Courageous Cat got the best of him, and there he also finished second.
Caracortado has won 8 races out of 17 starts, with lifetime earnings of $774,105.
