Caracortado turned in a 5 furlong work in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs
The Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Sprint prospect, 4-year-old gelding Caracortado, prepares for the Churchill Downs Sprint on 5 November, 2011, as he turned in a five furlong at Santa Anita Park’s main track on 23 October, 2011.
Michael Machowsky trained California bred Caracortado under regular rider Joe Talamo covered the five furlong distance in a minute, as he worked in company with Wile Revenge who was jockeyed by Martin Pedroza. Caracortado’s partner turned in five furlongs in 1 minute and 2 2/5 seconds.
Wild Revenge used as a target, and everything went perfect for the gelding.
The son of Cat Dreams, out of Mons Venus by Maria’s Mon, Caracortado last races in August, when he bagged the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap at Del Mar on 27 August, 2011, under his usual jockey Joe Talamo.
The pair covered the 1 mile distance on turf in 1 minute and 34.24 seconds, and in the process they defeated Mr. Commons and Calimonco who finished second and third, respectively.
Caracortado’s last win in 2011 came in Sunshine Millions Turf, the season opener over at 1 1/8 miles at Santa Anita Park on 29 January, 2011, as the 4-year-old male wrapped up the distance in 1 minute and 46.75 seconds.
In his next race, Caracortado came close to winning, but couldn’t edge past the winner Fluke who landed the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on turf at Santa Anita Park on 5 March, 2011.
Fluke covered the mile distance in 1 minute and 33.50 seconds, as Caracortado nosed out Jeranimo to keep his second place finish.
Caracortado scored a second place finish after two starts, where in between he finished 5th and 7th respectively. The Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile was one of the best races Caracortado ran all year round.
He came back from behind to create all sorts of problems to the leaders, but was unlucky not win the race and on another race if he had raced like that he could’ve possibly won it.
Courageous Cat barely escaping Caracortado’s late run at Hollywood Park on 2 July, 2011, and his winning time for the race was 1 minute and 33.19 seconds.
