Caracortado will skip the $1 million Pacific Classic to pursue other goals
The 4-year-old Michael Machowsky trained gelding, Caracortado will not be taking part in the Grade 1 $1million Pacific Stakes at Del Mar, but the gelding will be pointed towards other graded stakes and will appear in the 3 September – 4 September graded
stakes races.
Caracortado started off the season in a promising way, with the long awaited win coming in the Sunshine Millions Turf for 4-year-old males and beyond at 29 January, 2011, at Santa Anita.
The race was run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles. Under jockey Joseph Talamo Caracortado took on a field of massively experienced runners, but held on well throughout the race and got lucky with gaps.
It was his second start on turf ever in his 3-year-old racing career, and the 4-year-old gelding proved tat he can manage the turf quite well with poly track and dirt.
Since then Caracortado has gone on to participate in five races, and eluded the horse in each and every one of them.
He finished on the money in 3 occasions out of the 5 outings he has had this season, with two second place finished and a recent third place finish in the Grade 1 $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar.
It was Caracortado’s first start on the Del Mar course, and he ran an impressive race over a distance of 23 July, 2011. Under usual ride Joseph Talamo, Caracortado contested with the likes of Acclamation and Jeranimo on the Del Mar turf.
In the race of 3-year-old males and beyond, Caracortado put his head down and went for the winner, but unfortunately Acclamation run past him to overcome the leader Jeranimo and hitting the wire before both of them.
Caracortado finished 4 ½ lengths behind winner Acclamation. Jeranimo and Caracortado finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, and the winning time was 1 minute and 46.99 seconds.
The early scratch of an expected entrant has left a void in the line-up for the Pacific Classic, but the void has been filled quickly by the Craig Lewis trained 5-year-old horse, Quindici Man, who is coming off a disappointing run in the Wickerr Stakes at
Del Mar.
Quindici Man finished seventh on the day at Del Mar turf over a distance of 1 mile on 27 July, 2011.
It was an instant pick by trainer Craig Lewis when he saw his horse turn in a five furlong bullet in 1 minute and 1 1/5 seconds under Manny Rotela, who is his exercise rider.
That’s what prompted Quindici Man’s inclusion in the Pacific Classic.
Trainer Mike Machowsky was eyeing the Pacific Classic for his 4-year-old gelding ever since Caracortado finished a close third in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes, but now the gelding is pointed towards $200,000 Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on 28 August.
