Caravel to take on Double Ross in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle at Haydock
From the twenty runners who will race in the Grade 3 Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Registered As The Swinton) at Haydock on Saturday, 12th May, only three have raced at Haydock, Double Ross, Caravel and Tony Star.
Double Ross scored a decent second with Tony Star and Caravel failing to display anything impressive.
Caravel, Medicean’s eight-year-old chestnut gelding out of mare, Caraiyma, races with stronger chances today due to the seasonal victory. He was the 5/4 favourite winner of the Setsquare Recruitment Handicap Hurdle on 28th March at Taunton over two miles and a furlong.
Riding with Richard Johnson, Caravel led the runner up, Run Along Boy, by a good eleven lengths.
Concluding the race third was Della Sun.
Now the only time that Caravel raced at Haydock during the previous season resulted in a fifth position though the outcome cannot be solely attributed to the race course as the next two races, met the same fate. One was at Hexham and the other at Market Rasen.
Tim Vaughan trained ended fifth in the Grade 3 Totescoop6 Swinton Handicap Hurdle on 7th May, 2011 at Haydock over two miles.
Eradicate took a sweeping lead of thirteen lengths while Knight In Purple qualified as the runner up. Settling third in line behind the winner was Hunterview while the 3/1 favourite of the race, Remember Now, was the last to finish the race on the field of twenty-two.
The second start of the season will find Caravel racing a furlong less as compared to Taunton with a new jockey, Aidan Coleman. This will be the fourth time that the eight-year-old will race at Haydock, just this time his chances of dominating the race are way higher than they could have been before.
An entry to look out for is Double Ross, Double Eclipse’s six-year-old chestnut gelding out of mare, Kinross. He finished second in his first ever try at Haydock in the Grade 2 Williamhill.Com “Supreme Trial” Novices’ Hurdle on 21st January over two miles.
He has raced four times during the new season with scoring second being his best till yet. Fifth race and second try at Haydock can make him threatening for Caravel.
