Question:

Carbon Neutral?

I asked this question once before and got some interesting answers, but I want to know more about what the public thinks regarding this. Carbon neutral is the process of funding projects that enhance less poluting forms of electricity production such as wind farms and solar power, to make up for the carbon that we do emit in day to day life. It is near impossibly to reduce the carbon we emit 100% so this seems a good way to help the environment without giving up those parts of our life that we enjoy and aren't willing to give up?

What other possible solutions are there and why do the majority of the public not support the donation of money to environmentally friendly means as a way of reducing our carbon footprint?

  1. There are a lot of companies that will offer to plant trees to off set you carbon release. But the science on that is really shaky because they don't actually monitor how much the carbon the trees are actually taking up.

Wind and hydropower are viable in some areas of the country. In some that may allow communities to avoid using coal fire plants for electricity, but solar is not an option.

Over all the best way to reduce the amount of carbon that you produce is to by local created products. The carbon cost for shipping common food items like milk could be greatly reduced if you buy from a local dairy or farm.

I am not sure where you got this fact, but I haven't heard it before. I doubt very many people would care if you, or other individuals, donated money in order to reduce their carbon footprint. For me, and I believe for those you may be referring to, the point of contention is if you have the right to use the government to tell me I MUST donate money to reduce my carbon footprint. I feel if you want me to do this, you should negotiate, persuade, and convince me it is the right thing to do. I do not feel you should use the government to make me donate money to this cause, just like I shouldn't use the government to take your money to help my cause.

  3. It could be that we already have parks. We are suspicious to people that what to take our money to fix our problems.
