Question:

Carbon credits for airline flights?

I was wondering if anyone knows a good carbon credit website with good credentials, and how much it might cost to offset a two hour flight from Calgary to Denver.

Oh, and I really don't need any responses from people telling me carbon credits are stupid. I am a staunch environmentalist, you are not going to convince me otherwise.

  1. Carbon credits solve nothing because overall emissions are not in fact reduced. But if you feel guilty about flying don't. Al Gore flies everywhere in a private jet.

  2. This website does some conversions from flight to buses to car milages etc. It might be useful.

  3. You can buy them through Al Gore's green investment company Generation Investment Management. That is where he buys them. They also offer mutual funds in green corporations such as General Electric and Proctor and Gamble.

No i don't support them. It sound like a load of c**p to me.

  4. I'm a strong environmentalist too, and please give me a listen.  What I'm telling you stems from years of environmental work.

Carbon credits are a good idea for big industry, for individuals, not so much.

For industry, targets are set for carbon reductions.  Then trading credits lets those targets be met by the companies that can do it most cheaply.  That's great for society in general.  It worked very well for SO2, the cause of "acid rain".

For individuals they're more a "feel good" thing.  There are no targets.  Unlike big companies individuals have no way to check whether the people they're buying the credits from are doing what they say they will, efficiently.

Individuals would do better to spend their money on things they actually control.  Like better insulation, lighting, programmable thermostats, more efficient heating and cooling, more efficient transportation, etc.  They'll also save money in the long run.
