  1. Yes, CO2 is largely responsible for the greenhouse effect.  As is ozone, several nitrogen compounds, and methane among others.  While CO2 is not an effective greenhouse gas it is in the largest concentration in the atmosphere of the greenhouse gases, so it is very important.


  2. In rank order of importance (for creating the greenhouse effect): water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone are the dominant greenhouse gases. So, carbon dioxide is actually second most important in creating the greenhouse effect.
