How do cruise ships rate against say flight and train as means of holiday transport in terms of carbon emissions?

  1. Pretty poorly, due to the nature of a cruise ship. Airplanes burn a lot of fuel per passenger mile, but a typical vacation only sees the airplane used at the very beginning and end. In contrast, a cruise ship is running its engines for the entirety of the cruise, even while in port.

    Trains are pretty efficient, being diesel-electric hybrids. Fun too.
