  2. Gangrene is a condition caused by the bacteria Clostridium perfringens (a rather nasty anaerobic bacteria).

Boils and Carbuncles are usually caused by one of the Staphylococcus organisms.

The only way you can technically get gangrene is if the Clostridium bacteria gets introduced into the wound.  I don't think that is the case.

However, having said that, Staph aureus does give off a very nasty toxin that primarily kills the cells in the surrounding tissue and allows the bacteria to multiply.  The toxin is strong enough to damage the white cells - your primary line of defense.

I hope the pills that you're taking are an antibiotic; which I hope means that you've seen a physician about this condition.

Large boils that change color (red to blue to purple) are a sign of a bad infection.  Incision and Drainage (I&D) along with antibiotics is the best treatment regimen.  The antibiotics may not get all the way into the infection if the boil is not lanced and drained.

Gangrene? No, but nonetheless, you might have a rather nasty Staph infection that must be attended to.  Good luck!
