Card not initialized message

Question

I have a Fujifilm finepix digital camera which when I turn on reads 'card not initialized'. While on holiday I took the card to a camera shop to be transferred on to a disk however I was told that nothing was being read on the card and when I put the card back in the camera I had the not initialized message. Unfortunately this happened when the card was nearly complete.

Any help would be greatly appreciated inorder to retrieve the pictures.
