Cardiac arrest overshadows Maiquel Falcao’s career – MMA News
Maiquel Falcao, the 30-year old Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter was admitted to a hospital. He suffered a heart attack when he was at home in Rio Grande do Sul. His manager, Marcelo Brigadeiro, later confirmed the reports of his illness. According to Falcao’s manager, the MMA fighter has never experienced any sort of such illness or heart condition.
Falcao’s was an unexpected health condition, which the MMA fighter faced on Sunday. He was taken in the emergency ward of the hospital where he was admitted into the intensive care unit. Marcelo Brigadeiro said, "Maiquel is still on the Intensive Care Unit and might stay there for few more days, when he'll go through a catheterization…He's lucid and improving fast."
Nicknamed Big Rig, Falcao was in his last fight in October 2011 at the Apocalypse FC 1 event in Brazil. He defeated compatriot MMA fighter Douglas del Rio through knockout punches in the first round. He made his UFC debut in 2010 against the American MMA fighter Gerald Harris at UFC 123 in November 2010. Falcao signed a contract with the Bellator Fighting Championships this year. He was looking forward to fight in the middleweight tournament by Bellator, an MMA promotional corporation based in Chicago and California.
The Brazilian MMA fighter was on a winning streak from 2004 to 2007. He won eight consecutive fights where he defeated all of his compatriot fighters, most of them through knockout and technical knockouts. His other winning streak came from March 2009 to July 2011 where he won nine consecutive matches.
Although Falcao had been in the MMA ring for years, his claim to fame was the UFC fight he took part in at UFC 123. He did win in the UFC ring, which was good enough for him to extend his career in the UFC. However, his chances to further excel in the UFC circuit were reduced to minimum when the UFC management cancelled his contract and removed him from their list of fighters. The reason for his expulsion from the UFC was because of his aggressive behaviour in his real life. He was taken into custody after his involvement was confirmed in an assault, which he was part of in 2002.
