Cardiff Blues expect David Young to remain at the club until the completion of his contract - Rugby
Welsh professional rugby union club, Cardiff Blues, have expressed hope that their Director of Rugby, David Young, will see through his contract with the club. Blues officially made the statement after certain segments of the media reported that Young is
set to join the English professional rugby union side London Welsh.
The statement was released on the club’s website on Wednesday June 22 and read, “We (Cardiff Blues) have had no approach from London Wasps regarding Cardiff Blues Director of Rugby David Young. David Young is still in contract at the Blues and has one year
to run on that contract, which we expect him to honour.”
Cardiff Blues’ chairman, Peter Thomas, has also joined the ongoing conversation and shown his interest in retaining the former Welsh international prop. He confirmed that the Wasps had not approached him in order to acquire the services of Young as Wasps’
Director of Rugby.
Thomas has termed Young as a very important part of the club’s staff. He said, “He is a massively important part of the Cardiff Blues set-up. He has our highest respect and regard. There's no way we would want Dai Young to leave the Cardiff Blues.”
Young, who has played 51 international matches for Wales, started his coaching career in the 2002/03 season. Young’s first assignment as coach came with the Blues and in the past nine seasons he has remained with the Blues.
Thomas has also hinted that Young’s impressive performance in the coaching role makes him a suitable candidate for the Welsh national rugby team’s assignment. Young previously has applied for the role in 2006 but his candidature was rejected.
Reports are surfacing that Young will meet with Thomas on Thursday, June 23, to discuss the matter further.
Thomas on the other hand has expressed his desire that Young complete his current contract with the Blues. Thomas said, “I've always said that Dai Young's next job should be with the Welsh Rugby Union as coach of Wales. He has expressed that maybe the time
would come one day that he would want to leave. As I explained to Dai, when that time comes he would go with our support and blessing. But at the moment he's got a year left on his contract.”
Premiership side Wasps have won the Heineken Cup twice and are without their Director of Rugby since the departure of Tony Hanks in February. Wasps have won the English Premiership title six times, however, their performance in the previous season was very
poor.
Wasps managed to won just nine of their 22 games in the season and finished ninth in the 2010/11 Aviva Premiership season with 43 points.
