Cardiff City sign Chris Riggott
Cardiff City have signed former Middlesbrough defender Chris Riggott. Riggott who can play in a range of positions across the defence was a free agent having been released by Middlesbrough during the summer. The defender has also played in central midfield
during his spell at Derby County.
The former under 21 international has had constant knee injuries during his time at Middlesbrough and was let go by manager Gordon Strachan in June. Riggott was signed by former Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate for £2 million in 2003 from his home
club Derby County. Since the move he has been plagued with injuries and has never featured as a prominent player in the side. The player hopes that a move to Cardiff will resurrect his career and allow him some much needed first team football.
The move will be seen as a gamble by Cardiff manager Dave Jones who is expected to at least achieve a playoff position. Jones has already signed a number of high profile names including Craig Bellamy, Jason Koumas, Seyi Olofinjana, Danny Drinkwater and Tom
Heaton. Riggott is the latest recruit who aims to bolster their campaign in the Championship and revive their fortunes with the club narrowly missing out on promotion in successive seasons.
It is expected that Riggott will need some time to become fit, but it increases the number of options for the Cardiff City manager. The defender had been training with the Welsh club for the summer, but the transfer was not settled until now with Riggott
picking up another knee injury.
Jones confirmed that Riggott would not feature against Ipswich this weekend since he is not fully fit. The player is expected to undertake a gruelling fitness test prior to his debut to confirm that the player is indeed over the injuries that have plagued
his career.
