Cardinals’ David Freese will not appear in Sunday’s finale—MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese is unlikely to play the Sunday’s final game against the Chicago Cubs as he is reported to be dealing with the irritation to one of his fingers on the right hand.
The St. Louis Cardinals which won the Saturday’s game with relative ease has drawn the series. Sunday’s game will determine which team will have the upper hand as both the sides have performed well, with the Cardinals winning four out of the last six games.
As for Freese, there are not any reports of structural damage to his fingers. Even though the problem did not seem serious in nature, the team manager Mike Matheny preferred going for giving the player rest instead of taking risk.
Even though the game holds tremendous importance, the team manager thinks it is preferable to go for a much safer option than choosing for danger.
"I'd love to have him in there [on Sunday], but I know sometimes you also have to make the sacrifice for the longer term," Matheny said. "I think that could be the case."
The injury problem had begun, as reports suggested, before the Friday game when the Cardinals were to take on the Cubs. It became more evident when the player twice fumbled while having the grip of the bat.
With Sunday’s rest, the player is expected to regain his fitness and make a comeback in the team. On the other hand, Adrian Beltran is all set to keep empowering the team’s offence with his wonderful performance throughout the start of the season so far.
He owes it to a good spring, and hopes he will be able to keep up the good performance.
"I felt that Spring Training went well for me, so I wasn't expecting anything different," Beltran said. "I was expecting to start the season on a positive note. I feel good at the plate, and I just need to continue to get going."
With David Freese taking rest, Beltran will have key role to play in charging up the offence for the Cardinals. Sunday’s result will determine how the Cardinals perform without Freese at the plate.
