Cardinals’ QB mess gets messier; rookie Max Hall named starter
So much for Derek Anderson leading the Arizona Cardinals back to the play-offs. After Anderson’s ineffectiveness through four games, the Cardinals named rookie Max Hall their starting quarterback.
The Cardinals already released former first-round pick Matt Leinart before the season began when they named Anderson their starter. Now they’re down to a player who was at the bottom of their depth chart heading into training camp.
Anderson was benched last Sunday after throwing two first half interceptions, the second one being returned for a touchdown. Hall played the rest of the game, as the Cardinals were humiliated in a 41-10 loss at San Diego.
The undrafted BYU quarterback will make his first start against the defending Super Bowl champions this Sunday, as the New Orleans Saints will head to Glendale, Arizona. That’s certainly a tough test for any quarterback, especially a rookie whose competition
on the other sideline is Drew Brees.
The Cardinals have managed to go 2-2 with their situation under centre, tied with the Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams. Anderson managed to complete just 52 percent of his passes in his four starts, with three touchdowns and five interceptions.
The cries for Kurt Warner to come out of retirement will continue even though Warner will not be coming back. Warner has shot down any rumours of a comeback in recent weeks and the Cardinals will have to make do with what they have or look for a deal before
the trade deadline.
The Cardinals were outscored 82-17 in their two losses, but they are still at 2-2 and still in their division race. With the NFC West being so weak and with the pre-season favourite San Francisco 49ers at 0-4, the Cardinals are not out of anything yet. Don’t
expect any miracles out of Max Hall, but the Cardinals’ talent throughout their roster may be able to keep them in the hunt. Still, expect the Cardinals to look for available quarterbacks around the league.
