Cardinals’ pitcher Jaime Garcia avails praise from Manager Tony La Russa
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia was on top of his game on Thursday, October 20, when he pitched seven scoreless innings against the Texas Rangers at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis during Game 2 of the World Series. Even though the Rangers picked
up the winner, Garcia provided his club with all the time needed to put the runs on the scoreboard. Cards manager Tony La Russa was content with his starter and he made that fact known to the press after the game.
"We'll look forward to pitching [Garcia] again, if it turns out that way, and I certainly think it probably will," La Russa said. "But as far as he's concerned, I mean, that's a major step that he can rely on the rest of his career."
The club is currently 1 – 1 in the tournament and there is an expectation for this World Series to stretch beyond five games. The Rangers are known to smash a lot of homers and the 200 plus figure of the regular season in the American League stands as a
testament of that fact. Garcia however has proved his worth as the hurler closed the night with three hits and a walk allowed.
From his 87 pitches, he collected seven strikeouts. The pitcher has been on the fringe side of things as he has gone 0 – 2 in the post season with an earning runs average of 3.97. His recent performance however puts him in the limelight and La Russa will
call him to the mound in Game 6 if this tournament stretches further.
The skipper was disappointed by the 2 – 1 loss that closer Jason Motte picked up. However he simply believes his team was beat in the ninth inning. That was a sentiment expressed by Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington, on Wednesday, after the Texans’ Game
1 loss.
"We did the best we could, and they did it better, so Series [tied] 1-1," La Russa said. "The only time you have regrets is if you didn't compete the proper way, and we did, and just got beat."
Both teams now need three wins, each, to lift the final trophy. Things are just getting started.
