  1. if youv'e never owned a snake go for the king snake (corn snake, cowboy and mexican are two other king variety) they're much much more timid then the big constrictors.. and they dont' get nearly as big (trust me, when a snake starts getting big it can get intimidating... ever seen a snakes teeth? they ALL have them, constrictors just don't have fangs.. but they're teeth are like little curved needles and they have up to a hundred or so of them.... these teeth are designed to catch and hold prey.. meaning if you pull away when it bites you, it only goes in deeper....

which is why i say the bigger snakes can get intimidating... even when a little snake bites you it hurts....

king snakes are also alot more forigiving whe it comes to care.... they're pretty happy with just a rock, some bedding a light and water bowl.... whereas pythons and boas not only need bigger cages, they need more rigid care, and they also require more to their home inlcuding things to climb on and hide under..

pythons/boas tend to be more of a loner snake... most are timid, but they're still pretty unpredictable (more so than other species kept as pets)

never touch the mouse you feed to your snake.... after awhile your snake will get used to the smell of it's food (mice) and if your scent is on the mouse, it can confuse them... and one day you go sticking your hadn in there to get 'em out and he thinks he's got food coming in and strikes.

just open the end of the box the mouse is in, and dump it in the cage. also once a week or so put about a half an inch of luke-warm water in the tub and let him swim around for a couple of minutes...

snakes are allergic to cedar, do NOT use cedar bedding, find a reptile specific bedding. you also need a UV lamp (black light will work too) and a heat rock on AT ALL TIMES.

keep him in the warmest room of your house... they don't like the cold, at all. makes sure you buy a reptile specific cage... this ensures your snake can't escape.. not all pet cages or tanks are made to house reptiles (snakes specificly) they're really good at finding their way out of things.... and they're very strong for their size.... i used to keep 2 20 pound weights over my pythons cage.... he was only about 4 feet long, but if i even put 35 over it, he'd push the lid off.
