I just recently brought home a 14 month old Savannah Monitor from a county rescue in the Peninsula. They de-wormed him and treated him for constipation. He had horribly dry peeling skin so when I got him home I held him on my lap and gave him a nice olive oil massage. He looks great now. Routine care is something I'm trying to develop. I need collaboration on what to do and how often to do it. So far this is what I have:

- lightly rub olive oil over his skin once a week to deter mites and encourage healthy skin

- Feed him a variety of live food (mice, gold fish, Hornworms, *-*Please add to this list of live items) every other day, and give snacks (hornworms and crickets) to munch on in-between days

- Change his soaking bowl daily

- Handle daily

- Build a really big enclosure to have as he grows (5ft X 3ft)

- have a good "do not disturb" hiding spot for him in the cage

- Thermometer temp goal of 90 degrees or higher to 110.

- Humidity goal of ???????

- Calcisand or reptile sand

  1. Hard boiled egg and superworms are also good foods.  Temps of about 85-90F are good, cooler at the other end of the tank, and a basking spot of 100-110F is nice.  Dark and cooler at night (no lights on).  Don't forget a UVB bulb as well.  They will soak in their bowls as needed.  Avoid calcisand or reptile sand...impaction is a risk.  Better choice is orchard bark or cypress  mixed with garden soil (bought from a store--in bags so it is clean).  They love to dig.  Light misting of the cage can help with humidity, but the cage should never be wet.
