  1. I like to do gift baskets. One of my favorites to make is the 5 Senses gift basket. You simply gather items to delight each of the five senses!  For taste, the choices are easy: One or more of the following: Gourmet teas, flavored coffees, wine or brandy, cookies, candies, etc.  For Smell, think of lovely scented things - bath gel, room or linen sprays or spritzers, sachets, candles, potpourri, etc. For Touch, consider textures that would be soothing, interesting, or refreshing to the touch - something like bath powder and a big, fluffy puff, a loofa sponge for the shower, body scrubs, lotions, etc. A gel mask for the eyes that can be placed in the freezer is a good choice. For Sight, an inspirational book, special friendship poem(s) (maybe framed), a lovely journal and pen, a framed photo of the two of you, movie or theatre tickets....the possibilities are endless. For Hearing, a nice CD of her favorite music, or perhaps a relaxation theme of pretty music combined with nature sounds such as the sea, rain, bird song etc.

Line your basket with layers of colored tissue. You may need to place some wadded tissue on the bottom, covered by the layered tissue, if you need to "lift" some of the items. Add some shredded gift basket filler if you want. I cut small squares of tissue, pinch the bottom into a loose cone shape, and stuff these tissue puffs here and there for pops of color and to help conceal some of the items. You can add a beautiful silk flower, such as a red or a white rose, or a perky sunflower or a trio of cheery daisies or buttercups. Just stick the stem down into the corner. Add a pretty bow to your container, and if you want, wrap in cellophane.

I have made these baskets using decorative boxes, such as a hat box, and I've used a tote bag, and once a plastic carry-all with handle from the dollar store. In fact, you could probably find some of the items from the dollar store! You don't have to spend a lot of money to put together a nice gift  basket - it's all in the presentation.

Use your imagination. I'm sure your friend will be delighted with whatever you do as a gesture of your friendship and devotion.

  2. I think it really depends on how much you'd like to spend and whether you are interested in giving gifts that are more practical or sentimental. For sentimental, a photo album with pictures of things you've done together would be nice. If you're willing to put in some more time and money, a scrapbook would be really nice and there are some great websites with examples and tips on how to put one together.

If you're interested in giving practical gifts, a giftcard to a homestore or even a grocery store that you know is in the area are ways you can really help out. I just moved and some people gave my boyfriend and me a giftcard to Trader Joe's, which was a really practical, useful gift. Unless she's loaded and has a decorator, she will appreciate giftcards to home stores like Target, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, etc., because the little stuff really adds up and no one who's just moved has their home just how they want it.

  3. Sun tan lotion!!!!

  4. Definitely a road map of the town/state where she is going and of course pictures of you and her having fun together.  Maybe a phone card, stamps, so she can stay in touch and don't forget some homemade goodies for the trip.
