I'm a fairly recent college graduate with a BS in Management. I have started working for AFLAC a few months ago and it's OK but not where I want to be eventually. Can someone give me advice who has industry experience as where to go in the insurance business. IE... Companies, Lucrative career path and that sort of thing. I don't have any family in insurance so I can't ask them and I'm somewhat in the dark... I'm kind of looking for a time line with guidance. Thank you my mentor...

  1. OK, the MOST lucrative thing, is sales - owning your own agency.  But that's not a "career path" thing - career path thing is working for a company, getting into management.  But you don't make the same money - the big bucks is in sales.

So you have to choose - title, or money?  If you want the money, you'll have to get licensed in P&C as well, and go work for an agency to build up your book, then start your own agency.

  2. New York Life is widely considered to have the best raining in the business. Would check with them and the other large carriers with offices in your area. The sales manager that hires you can play a big part in your success, is he skilled and willing to work with and mentor you?

You can also get you skills with Aflac and go independent, Allstate has a workplace division that is pretty big in the Aflac type products. They are sold through independent brokers and Allstate agents. If you are interested in that route you can even work with Allstate agents in your area but you would still be independent.

But with that said if you don't have the skills you will not close very many sales. I found these very helpful:

CD's "How to master the art of selling anything" by Tom
