Career..don't want to teach?

Question

I want to be a school counselor, but need a BA insomething. Been suggested I get an education degree but I have no interest in teaching. Counseling/psych degrees are pretty much useless. I will need a MA no matter what but just dont know waht to get a BA in!

If your goal is to be a school counselor and you know you need an MA regardless, then what difference does your undergraduate degree make?  None.  Just get one.

It won't matter if you don't want to teach and it won't matter if a psych degree is "useless" if your ultimate goal is to be a school counselor.  So why don't you just study a subject that interests you so if the counselor thing doesn't work out, you'll have a degree you're interested in to fall back on.

Another tip:  if you don't have a subject you're really interested in, I suggest that you major in something that will make you look well-rounded.  Graduate schools favor applications from students who are well-rounded.  Take electives you don't need to take to get your degree.  For example, if you're a Psych major, take some economics or a higher math to show the grad schools that you can do anything.  Good luck.

BA is not useless.  It all depends on the college u attend & the state in which u receive ur certification.  Def for school couselor u will need something in the couselling/psych dept.  You can try Family & Child Studies, Social Worker, Sociology, etc.  The Master u can begin once u have a job, since many corp/school help with tuition.  Good Luck!

psychology...don't worry too much about the BA being useless...just use it to work toward your Masters...the grad degree is what really counts...and psych is general enough to go into different fields.

I beg to differ. If you want to be a school counselor, then getting a degree in counseling or psychology is going to be a must. That is how one becomes a counselor. Saying they are useless is like a medical student saying biology is useless. I'd like to see you get a school counselor job without studying psychology. That would really be something.

BA is pretty much useless (BA in communications here) They get you in the door. If you want to get a job in your field, you will probably need a solid BS degree.
