I am currently a second year in progress mechanical engineer university student. Any tips on what I should do so that at the end of fourth year I get a good mechanical engineering job, such as extra courses or job related. Any companies that hire student junior mechanical engineers with degree in progress in toronto, ontario, Canada area.

Thanks

  1. Without a doubt... CO-OP.  It will extend you time until graduation, but at great reward.  You will go to school one semester (or quarter) and then work the next.  Talk to your career counseling center and they can set you up on some interviews.  It's great money, too.

  3. The best advice is to seek a Co-op or intern position.

The experience is really useful in getting work when you finish your degree. Once you graduate you'll be competing with thousands of other graduates, having real engineering experience will make you stand out.

An internship also helps you hone a bit better what you want to focus on in your studies because you have a better idea of what you can do and enjoy doing in your field.

I am a mechanical engineer and co-oped with GE - It was invaluable for me, and I've used that experience to set myself on a pretty rewarding career in high tech fields such as fuel cells and, shortly, space tech. What I learned in my internship led me to focus my interest on thermal sciences and fluids and to get a masters.

  4. Do youself a huge favor that will educate you even further.Get a job actually doing the work you paln to be engineering in the future. Learn first hand what the constuction folks have to deal with and how the work really gets done. The practical expierince will serve you well in the futer.I don't mean an engineering work study, I mean, be the guy swinging the hammer, cutting the steal, pouring the cement.I've worked for alot of engineers who have never lifted anything more than a pecil, have zero work expierence, and no clue.I can't count the projects that didn't work, that,we the mechanics had to make work long after the engineers were gone.I work with a great guy now,who has work expierience and won't hessitate one second to jump right in the dirtiest spot to see whats going on,or,what concerns we find and make corrections based on our suggestions. He listens to folks actually doing the work. It will help you in the long run and earn the respect of those performing the work. Good Luck!
