Career in zoology?

Question

I am about to be a junior in high school and lately I have been thinking about my top 2 choices of careers I want to pursue...veterinary medicine or zoology. My question is, what all can you do with zoology, how much do you make, and how many years of undergraduate and graduate school? Thanks! =D

You don't have to decide right away. A zoology major is great for someone in pre-vet. Either way, you will probably want to get a doctorate. You will need 4 yrs of undergraduate school plus either 3 yrs for vet school or about 4 yrs (+/-) to get a Ph.D. It took me six, plus another four years to polish my dissertation while I was teaching..

If money is going to be a deciding factor, go to vet school. People become zoologists because they can't imagine doing anything else with their lives. They either teach or do research, or consult for large firms, depending on their specialties.

It depends what you mean by a career in "zoology."  You could do research with animals and that could require extra education, like a PhD.  Or you could get a job at a zoo and work your way up to keeper or something, which wouldn't take any extra education I don't think.  If you're thinking about vet school, start preparing EARLY.  I'm applying to vet school this summer and there are so many things I wish I could change that I did when I was at your stage in life.  There are lots of jobs available in the animal field, but you really have to be dedicated to it because you definitely can't be in it for the money (because you won't be making any).  Good luck with your career search, there are loads of rewarding jobs waiting for you in this field.

I am also thinking about a career with animals too, its in my top 3 career choices. Um, a really good college for science that I am drooling over currently is UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) take a look at their website it's pretty spiffy. um aha I want a career with animals but i want it to be mostly either marine animals or endangered species. I discovered there are TONS of animal categories. It's pretty insane actually.

Go to seventeen.com and look for the college finder quiz that says what college could be perfect for you and it will have a section that talks about all the possible courses in any feild of study and it helped me a lot to find out specifics of my top 3.

there are career in zoology but not to much.you save animals,people like you .but for you this is not too good because there is not enough salary and it take many years to graduate in zoology  for you so the better is you have to take another line.
