I want to be a police officer and was wondering, what is it like being a police officer?

  1. What the above person mentioned is right. Do a ride along with the city you are interested in working for. That's what I did, and I fell in love with the job right away.

    As for the job itself. It's great! The friendships you make are going to be great. It's like a second family Its not all about the pay, but pay is well, and benefits are great (depending on what dept you go for).

    There will be times your patience will be tested. I cant explain the feeling, but helping people... standing up for people who cant stand up for themselves... its just a great feeling to be there for someone.

    It's an awesome job. But taking on this job means changing your lifestyle. Whatever you do after you get hired... you will be labeled as a police officer even when your off duty. You will be held at a "higher" standard.


  2. A good way to figure this out is to call your local department and see if you can go on a ride-along.  This will help you see what the day-to-day job actually entails and you can determine if this job will be for you.  You don't say your age, but if you're in high school, you can also check into becoming an Explorer - most departments have them, they are kids too young to get into academy, but they learn about the job and help the department.
