Career opportunities for females in the air force?

Hi I'm a female wanting to join the air force. I know that you have to be males to be in a combat situation but can females fly planes or helicopters? Can they fly in the search and rescue operations or in the medical helicopters? Can they be in a combat scene at all or in the action without actually fighting or do you have to be a male for all that? What kind of "in the action but not fighting" opportunities for females are there if any?

Thanks

- wanting to apply to the air force academy but trying to see if the careers they have are what im looking for

  1. The last time I was aware of these things the answer was yes. Things change sometimes but I can't see this reversing itself. There may be specific mos's that are restrictive but by the most part careers are open to women as well as men. Of course call a recruiter and finds out the right current anser.

  2. Just go to the Air Force recruiting website.  You can do any job that is not considered a "Battlefield Airman".  There are only 3 or so in the Air Force.  Yes you can fly planes.  Yes you can fly choppers.

Basically unless the job you are looking at says 'Pararescue, Combat Control, JTAC, TACP, Combat Weather', etc., you are probably good to go.  The AF website has everything you need to know right there in black and white.
