Question:

Careers as School-Based Counselors

I would like to find out if anyone works as a school-based counselor? I would love to find an opportunity to work with school kids to help them achieve high success and to learn about them and help them decide what they like or dislike. For anyone that does this for a living, how rewarding is this occupation for you? I am just in the works with going to college and I have like 28 or so college credits under my belt. I do not have a problem reaching high to achieve a career that will give me complete satisfaction and will enable me to work with children. I am a kid at heart and I know blending in with them and helping them would be the most beneficial career I could possibly have. I have always loved the teachers at my school and would love to go to school and be working instead of attending school. Can anyone help me and give me some encouragement or helpful advice on how to pursue this and how much do you love your job? If there isn't a strong need for counselors, then can you give me pointers in what other careers I can get into that deal with working with children in a school-based setting? I would like to be one of those americans that can actually say they love what they do for a living. I am sure I can live a pretty good lifestyle and with my fiancee going to school to be a RN, we both can live nice and comfortable lives. So any help with be great! Take care everyone!

  1. I know several school counselors and they all love their jobs! Since you have good relationships with your former high school, contact a few of the counselors there (or at any high school really) and ask to arrange an "informational interview." During the interview, you can ask them all about their jobs, job satisfaction and what training they would suggest. You can also ask about the drawbacks to this type of job.

Most councelors would be happy to give you an hour or two of their time, to discuss the field.

Most of the counselors I know trained as teachers and have advanced degrees in school administration or education.
