Question:

Careers before becoming a neurologist?

Hi, everyone. I am currently in college and I am really trying to find the right career for me. My long-term goal is to become a neurologist, but I was wondering - what careers are there before becoming a neurologist. I do not want to spend > 10 years on becoming a neurologist and not having a job in between. I know that neurology is all about biology/chemistry (and a few others) - so my question is: before becoming a neurologist, what careers are there that I could do WHILE obtaining my MD? Thank you in advance!

  1. Very, very few people are able to work while attending med school.  I had only one classmate try (out of 120), who as a registered nurse made sense because he could grab an extra $500/month for relatively few hours, and this only through the first 18 months of school.  You'd be nuts to try putting yourself through school working part-time at the Gap because the coursework is so demanding.

  2. You just can't. During classes, you are (or should be) too busy. Typically you channel your free time in the summers towards doing something both medically oriented and income producing. Research is great but the pay is unpredictable.
