Question:

Careers in Renewable Energy?

How does someone get into a career working with renewable energy? A technician or similar job working with wind or solar would be something I'd be very interested in. I'm a year away from completing my Associate's in electronics and electrical control systems. This is something I feel I could be very passionate about and enjoy doing.

  1. "Farming" was the original renewable energy career.  With corn-to-ethanol it has become fashionable (and profitable) again.

Companies are a little wary about "passion" in a job seeker.

Just take the highest paying offer and be prepared to relocate.  The most efficient use of your skills and the incredibly huge investment society has made in your education is where someone will pay you the most.

Taking a lesser job simply to "make a difference" isn't a great return on investment.

  2. Look on major corporations employment pages.   GE and Siemens both build and install windmills and have openings in those fields.   Or look in the yellow pages for people who install solar panels, small wind turbines or heat pumps.    They all need electrical controls of some sort.
