Careers in horse industry?

Im from Kentucky and I really want to have a career that has to do with horses, I am currently a freshmen in college. I have been doing some research and I can't figure out what job description in the horse business I am looking for, there are so many to pick from. I want to work around horses(not just selling supplies for them), I would love to be able to travel, and I want a good paying salary. Do I have any options other then Horse vet? I would preferably love to do something in the horse racing industry, but thats just an idea. Any thoughts or ideas would help, Thanks!

  1. If you want a great list of horse careers get the book Careers with Horses by Vicki Hogue-Davies. The book lists every single career that has anything to do with horses as well as contact info (if you want to learn more about it), a job description, training needed, interviews with people in that career, etc. Its a really great resource that is easy to use and holds a ton of info! Good luck!

  2. Equine Therapist, Horse vet, Horse dentist, Horse trainer, Horse breeder, part owner of a race horse, Riding instructor, one of those people who take tourists on treks...there's heaps!!!!!  I want to go into the horse industry too ( I LOVE Horses!!!!) and these are just a few ideas that i picked up!

  3. out riders ( escort ponies) are paid really well, and you can move with the circuit....also the University of Arizona  has a racing degree that teaches pretty much everything you need to know to get into the management and training professions

  4. I have to tell you that firstly very few jobs in the horse industry pay well!  Most of the jobs will mean long hours and poor pay, you need to do it for the love of the horses, not for the money.

My first thought goes to something like the Darley Flying Start programme.  It is a course aimed atyoung people who want to ultimately have managerial roles in the racing/breeding industry.  You certainly get to travel on the course (UK, Ireland, Dubai, Australia, etc) but competition for places is fierce.

Have a look at their website and see if it appeals to you: http://www.darleyflyingstart.com/

Have a long hard think about what is most important to you though: money or the horses, becasue you will be hard pushed to find both!

  5. Of course you have more options! You sound just like me!! I'm going to be a TB racehorse trainer. That way whether the horse is even owned by me or not I can travel with them! Good luck!

  6. Well it sounds like something is holidng you back ?

Like may I ask what your weight is ?

Why not be a vet tech

or go to the track and go into   marketing ?

or is it only horses you want to work with ?

Why not learn to drive ?

Look up A GREAT WEB SITE CALLED

yardandgroom.com this has jobs all over the nation

    good luck
