Hi guys,

I really need more information, i dont have a social worker a the minute, but i care for a young women who have usher syndrome type 1, i care for her full time, and with her mostly everyday supporting her. Now all i get for caring for her is carers allowance £50.55 every week, and its nothing, how do the government exspect you to live on just that, its impossible. I cant work because i care for her full time, and never have free days, if i do its rare :(

This i were told to help me because i care for her full time, i can get a free bus pass, is this possible ? Can i apply for one? If i can how can i do this ? I live in birmingham.

And is there any other finacial help i can get given anymore? Or just help i can get? ? Ive only been a carer since last year so its now one year ive been caring for her, but ive known her 4 years.

Please i need all the help i can get to see what im entitled to

  1. The person you are caring for can get DLA, disability living allowance, which allows them to pay you to look after them.  http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeop...

You can get more help at the links below.  You may not be able to get a free bus pass, but the person you are caring for may be entitled to one.

  2. Not sure about a bus pass but you really need to get the social services involved.

The young lady is hopefully in receipt of benefits like Disability Living Allowance and may well be eligible for an Independent Living package this will give her the money to employ you to look after her. It's not as scary as it sounds.

Go and see someone at your local citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) they will guide you.

  3. I don't know if youd be entitled to free travel as a carer, to be honest. I live in the West Midlands too, and I just found this for you...

    http://www.networkwestmidlands.com/Mobil...

It only mentions a free pass if you are disabled yourself.

My daughter gets DLA, so we are very lucky that she has got a Motability car. We've only had this for about a year, and before we got it we had to rely on buses to get about.

I know how frustrating being a carer can be. They make it so difficult to find out information like this, and if you don't ask, you don't get.

Is there a carer's group in your area that might be able to help you find out what help is available? I will come back if I hear of anything that might help you. Good luck.

  4. contact your council and they will tell you how you go about getting a free bus pass

  5. There should be some info on this website http://www.carers.org/articles/carers-as...

you are doing a terrific job and more should be done to help carers like yo x
