Eddie Newton, former Chelsea midfielder, has revealed he was somewhat surprised to receive a call from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Di Matteo asking him join his coaching staff.
Following the sacking of Portuguese manager Andre Villas-Boas, his assistant coach Roberto Di Matteo has been made the first team coach. The Italian’s first act as the caretaker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 manager was to call Eddie Newton to urge him to come back to the club,
this time as a member of the backroom staff.
The duo have previously worked together, Newton was with Di Matteo at both MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion. That was probably why Di Matteo felt the need to reunite with his friend and colleague at Stamford Bridge after he was made in charge.
Newton said in an interview:
"Robbie and I had a little chat. I congratulated him on getting the position. He said, 'I want you to come in', and I said, 'Okay'.”
Di Matteo and Newton will be put to the test straight away with the Blues facing Birmingham City in the replay of the fifth round of the FA Cup. The first fixture ended in a 1-1 draw and Chelsea will be looking to avoid further embarrassment by securing
a win over the Championship side.
Despite the daunting task ahead, which is to lead Chelsea to a UEFA Champions League spot, get past Birmingham in the FA Cup and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Napoli-c40003 in the European competition, Newton was prepared to get things underway as soon as possible.
He revealed:
“It has been very quick and quite emotional - everyone knows I love the club and am looking forward to giving my all.”
Newton revealed he was prepared to get working with the Chelsea squad and helping them on an individual level if need be. He confirmed his availability to all Chelsea players whenever they wanted to talk and urged the club to put their poor spell behind
them and move forward.
Newton continued:
“As soon as possible, I want to get stuck into the coaching, working individually with players, doing the whole shebang.
If anybody wants to talk to me, I am there and let's have a bit of passion going forwards.”
