Carey Price blocks 17 as Montreal Canadiens shutout New York Rangers 4-0 -NHL Match Update
Disappointed in their last matchup in which Montreal lost to the New York Islanders, the Canadiens bounced back and shutout the New York Rangers, 4-0, with Carey Price blocking all 17 shots on his net for another shutout, on Saturday night, November 19,
2011, at the sold-out Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
"It shows that we're a desperate team," said Montreal Canadiens goalie, Carey Price. "You come in here and you face a team that's streaking and you've got a lot of young kids in the line-up, you're almost playing scared. You're really desperate, so I think
we had that advantage."
New York was limited to nearly half the opportunities throughout the matchup as compared to their competitors, the Canadiens, as Montreal outshot the Rangers, 31-17, obviously resulting in them to scoring more goals.
Erik Cole opened the scoring with his sixth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season during their first power play advantage of the night in the opening period.
Brian Gionta added another to extend the lead at the 8:12 mark of the second period, but with another period still the pipeline, the Rangers still had a lot of time to make a comeback.
As desperate as Montreal was, they were equally as focused and did not allow New York to enter back in the contest in any way possible.
Tomas Plekanec made another goal for the Canadiens to capitalise on their second of six added man advantages throughout the 60 minute matchup, followed by Brian Gionta with less than seven minutes remaining to secure the game.
"When you're winning games, your special teams are going to be there, there's no question about that," Gionta said. "We've got two good units on the power play now that can produce, and that's really key. Either way you've got a full two minutes of guys
that are making things happen.”
Montreal has one more home game pending against the Boston Bruins on Monday before heading out for two more while the Rangers will be visiting the Florida Panthers on Wednesday for their second last contest on the road before returning home to finish off
the month.
