Carey Price responds to being booed by fans
After getting booed off the ice during a preseason game against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price responded back on Thursday with a message for the fans.
"Relax, chill out, we have lots of time. We're not winning the Stanley Cup on the first exhibition game," he said. "I don't know what (the fans') message was but I don't think it's the correct way to go about things."
During the game on Wednesday, Price allowed four goals on only eight shots and was replaced by Curtis Sanford midway through the second period. That’s when most of the jeering occurred. Oddly enough, Price received a huge ovation
when he hit the ice during the pre-game warm-up and when his name was announced for being in the starting lineup just prior to the opening whistle.
"That's the just the way it is, there's nothing we can really do about it," Price said.
"Wherever I go in the city, people are very courteous," he added. "Nobody's ever come up to me and said, 'You suck' to my face. I don't think anybody would ever do that. It's just that when you get in a crowd, people are a lot
more brave."
Price’s comments were an attempt to calm the fanbase, rather than stir up more controversy and admitted that these things happen in a hockey-crazed city like Montreal.
Head coach Jacques Martin had a brief talk with Price during Thursday’s practice.
"He just told me that it's the first exhibition game, so it's not going to go down in the history books. Let's move on," said Price.
Price’s teammates also weighed in and were there to defend him.
"We've all got his back and we're all supporting him," Habs forward Mike Cammalleri said after the game. "No one in here is booing him, so if everyone wants to identify with this team, we're all supporting him so jump on board."
