Caribbean Men’s National Team roster revealed – Volleyball news
The Cuban Volleyball Federation announced the 14-player roster of National Men’s Volleyball Team on Thursday, May 19, 2011.
After a careful analysis of players’ performance and strict evaluation, the best players were shortlisted for the national team. Cuba is set to chip in in the 2011 FIVB World League, which will take the centre stage in coming week of May.
The Caribbean team will enter the competition under the command of head coach, Orlando Samuels. Wilfredo Leon has been selected as the new captain of the team. The team composition of Cuba is as follows:
Wilfredo Leon - Captain Rolando Cepeda – Outside Hitter (OH) Henry Bell – OH Dennys Hernandez – OH Yoandri Diaz - Setter Lian Sem-Estrada - Setter Leandro Macias – Setter Osmany Camejo – Middle Blocker (MB) Dariel Albo - MB Yasser Perdomo – MB Fernando Hernandez - Opposite Livan Osoria - Opposite Keibel Gutierres – Libero Yosniel Guillen - Libero
The mentor of Cuban team worked really hard over the past few weeks and assembled a great team for the mega international event.
Alongside Samuels, the assistant coaches Nicolas Vives and Idalberto Valdes played an instrumental role in finalising the team roster. Roberlany Simon was attached with Cuban squad as captain before Wilfredo.
However, this is the good change as the new captain is full of ambition to lead his team to success. Simon is out due to some personal reasons. He requested the Cuban Federation for rest after intense activity of last season.
Besides Simon, another influential player Raydel Hierrezuelo is out of Cuban Team for 2011 FIVB World League. Hierrezuelo played as the setter of team but he underwent injuries during the training session, which forced him to stay out of the team.
Likewise, Yoandy Leal has not been included in the team this year. He participated in the World Championship last year and worked out good performance. However, he did not attend the National League and scored low at school and training camp. That is why
he could not find a place on the national team roster this season.
Cuba has been grouped with teams from Italy, France and South Korea in the Pool D. The Caribbean team will have tough competition with Italy and France in the preliminary robin round, while they have the potential to easily subdue the South Korean Team.
Currently, Team Cuba is staying in Bulgaria and preparing for the upcoming encounters. Now the world has to wait and see how Cubans confirm their ambition for better status.
