Caribbean T20 2010-11: Canada and Barbados prevail in their matches of the day
Canada and Barbados started their second season of the Caribbean T20 campaign in an emphatic style winning their respective matches on January 11th, 2011, adding 4 points to their accounts.
In the first match of the day, Canada sealed a convincing 23-run victory over Hampshire at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua. Chasing a below-par 130 to win, the Hampshire side could amass only 106 for 8 from
their allotted quota of 20 overs. Jimmi Hansra and Parth Desai were the most economical bowlers from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 conceding runs at an economy of less than 4 per over.
After winning the toss, the Canada skipper, Ashish Bagai opted to set a total. But the decision did not get as such backing from the team as the side could compile only 129 runs from their allotted 20 overs.
Openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ruvindu-Gunasekera-c87250 and Hiral Patel took the side to a solid but thorough start putting 39 runs on the board from six overs with the mass coming from the former. Patel was run out on the first ball of seventh over by Myburgh.
The departing opener took 15 balls to score seven runs. Patel was soon followed back by his fluent partner Gunasekera and captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rizwan-Cheema-c2328 then steadied Canada’s innings ensuring a run rate
of more than a run a ball with a quick knock of 31 runs which included two lofty sixes and a boundary as the side reached 129 for 7 at the end of allotted quota of overs.
129 seemed inadequate to be defended but a couple of run-outs and an oppressive spell from 20-year-old left-arm spinner Parth Desai proved it to be sufficient as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 were restricted to 106 for 8 in their chase. The English county
made a slow and steady start to their chase before losing a couple of quick wickets in the middle-order.
The opening pair of Hampshire featuring captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Vince-c1657 before Desai broke his stumps
in the ninth over to leave the Hawks 39 for 2 on the board.
At 65 for 3 in the 14th over, Hampshire seemed to be well into the game but three wickets for five runs in the next three overs took the game away from Jimmy Adams’ side. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Benny-Howell-c1147 tried to buckle down the things for
his side but regularly clattering wickets at the other end ruined his unbeaten 22 as well that came off just 17 balls.
The second game of the day was also a low-scoring clash between Barbados and Leeward Island. Barbados chased down Leeward Island’s paltry 113 despite two brief rain halts.
Wilden Cornwall, the Leeward Island captain surprisingly opted to bat under overcast conditions and was soon made to regret his decision as his top three batsman were back in the pavilion for a combined contribution of 10 runs. The
side was soon reeling at 44 for 5 and of the top five Leeward Island batters, only Devon Thomas could get past single digit score. Thirties struck by Tonito Willett and Justin Athanaze pushed the side cruise past 100, but their total still proved to be inadequate
to seal the deal in their favour.
Barbados also went off to a poor start with its four wickets down for only 23. Alcino Holder single-handedly steered the side to a victory in the last over with four balls and four wickets intact. Holder scored unbeaten 44 from 45
deliveries.
